setting the timing on my 1983 SERIES 111,88" WHEEL BASE 2.28L DIESEL
TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKEN, NO SIGN OF EP MARK ON FLYWHEEL ,JUST A DEEP v SHAPED GROVE THAT LINES UP WITH TIMING POINTER WHEN KEY WAY ON CRANK SHAFT IS AT 12 OCLOCK
AT THIS POSITION NO 1 EXHAUST VALVE IF FULLY OPEN HITS PISTON :
wHERE SHOULD NO 1 PISTON BE WHEN FLYWHEEL IS IN CORRECT POSITION

anyone got advice

Have old Haynes manual, EP mark looking from flywheel end of engine is about 1inch anti-clockwise away from TDC mark. your comment about piston/exhaust valve is spot on. if you have access to fax, i can send you relative page from book, or you can ring me and i can talk you through it. Let me know through this forum

thanks for response I have the Haynes manual but i don,t see the info about where the EP mark should be. what page is it on
I will look more closely around the TDC position I can get this by checking No 1 pistor rise but do you know if it is also when then"gash" on the flywheel is in line with the timing pointer
apart from this gash there seems to be no other marks on the flywheel exept for one in chalk.
also the timing pointer in all the books is nicely in the centre of the inspection port on the flywheel cover .on mine its almost out of sight under the flywheel cover
i wonder if this is normal.

haynes manual l/r Diesel series 11a &111 1958 to 1985 issue , starts page 29 section no 34 onwards, relevant text page 33 step No 11, starts with "if a new camshaft"
